I am pleased to announce you that on 22th June at 5:00 p.m. (Italian hour) a webinar of prof. Francesca Ervas (University of Cagliari) on “Metaphors and fallacies of reasoning: an experimental approach” will take place on Teams (https://tinyurl.com/5395trka) within the cycle of scientific webinars for the MD in Cognitive science and Theory of communication. All interested students and teachers are invited to participate.
Here the abstract: Metaphors in argumentation are frequently viewed as misleading language that can result in logical fallacies. Nevertheless, they can also offer valuable insights into creative argumentation, resulting in novel knowledge. Metaphors possess a framing effect that inherently presents a particular standpoint for comprehending the world, thereby directing the evaluation of arguments.
The purpose of the talk is to present and discuss the results of three experimental studies on the role of metaphor in 1) quaternion terminorum (QT), 2) ad misericordiam arguments (AMA), and 3) ad hominem arguments (AHA). Specifically, it seeks to show how committing a fallacy in these cases depends on the type of metaphor used (conventional vs. novel), the affective valence of the metaphor (positive vs. negative), and the type of argument employed (QT vs. AMA vs. AHA).
