Fasoli - Digital overuse and the dogma of harmony

Students and colleagues are invited to the fourth scientific webinar for the Academic Year 2023/24 which will be held on Teams on 22th April at 4:00 pm (Italian hour) by Marco Fasoli (University of Rome "La Sapienza"). Here the link: https://tinyurl.com/25zn66zw. The webinar is entitled: "Digital overuse and the dogma of harmony". I remind that the attendance of the webinar is mandatory in order for the students enrolled in the MD in Cognitive science and Theory of communication to get one credit (CFU/ECTS). The attending students have also to write a 10.000 letter report plus bibliography. Here attached you find the flyer of the event.

Abstract: Digital overuse (DO) can be defined as a usage of digital technologies that subjects perceive as dissatisfactory and non-meaningful a posteriori. DO has often been implicitly conceived as one of the main obstacle to so-called digital well-being. The article is structured in two parts. The first provides a definition of the phenomenon and a brief review of the explanations provided by various disciplines, in particular psychology, the evolutionary and behavioural sciences, and 4 E cognition. Specifically, the article distinguishes between the endogenous and exogenous factors underlying digital overuse, that is between causes that seem to be intrinsic to digital technologies, and design techniques intentionally aimed at nudging users towards this behaviour. The second part is devoted to a discussion of the ethical concerns surrounding the phenomenon of the overuse of digital technologies, and how it may be possible to reduce such overuse among users.
